Eric Cantona coming back for Paul Scholes Testimonial

Paul Scholes testimonial will pit Manchester United against the New York Cosmos at Old Trafford on Friday 5  August, 2011. Cantona has been confirmed as part of Paul Scholes testimonial game on August 5, when the Frenchman will coach the legendary New York Cosmos side, currently bidding to gain admittance to Major League Soccer.

The Frenchman, Director of Soccer at the Cosmos, will pit his managerial wits against Sir Alex Ferguson as he takes charge of the visitors, who will feature a selection of invited stars from around the world, and Scholes is relishing the occasion. Following David Beckham's return for Gary Neville's testimonial last month, it marks another significant day for United, and Scholes in particular.

Scholes retires - but stays at Old Trafford

According to manutd.com Paul Scholes has decided it is time for him to hang up his boots and retire from playing football.

Paul will take on a coaching role with United from the start of next season. Fans will also have the opportunity to see Paul play again at Old Trafford in his testimonial match in August.

Paul Scholes said: "I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do and to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United has been a real honour. This was not a decision that I have taken lightly but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing. To have been part of the team that helped the club reach that 19th title is a great privilege.

Scholes still undecided about playing next season

Paul Scholes so far has not made a definitive statement about whether he will return next season, and I don’t think Fergie is even sure at this point.

The longer that Scholes takes to sign a new one-year extension, the more likely it seems to me yhat he will be at Old Trafford next season.

 

Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Darron Gibson wants to join Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher and sign a new deal. Speaking to Click Manchester, Gibson seemed confident that he will sign a new long-term deal.

“I have one year left on my contract and there haven’t been discussions but I’m confident I’ll get a new one. I’d love to be here for the rest of my career.”

Man Utd News: Sir Alex Ferguson wants Paul Scholes to stay at Manchester United as a coach once he retires.

 

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated once again that he wants Paul Scholes to sign a new one-year contract extension at the club. 

Ferguson has also let the midfielder know that there is a place on his coaching team once he retires, should he want to stay in the game.

It has often been suggested that the former England international would end up playing for Oldham Athletic – the club he supported as a boy. 

However, his current manager believes he has enough quality to stay at the top for at least another year.

Ferguson told the Sunday Mirror: “I want [Paul] Scholes to stay, but he is such a proud person.

“He wants to play in every game and I fully understand that.

“But if we can get him to buy into the way I have been using him, sparing him in some games and using him in important matches, then he is of fantastic value to us.

“Paul has a place on the staff here when he retires and everybody at United wants him to stay on.”

Scholes’ current lack of playing time at Old Trafford has seen him slip down the Castrol Rankings to a current position of 93.
