Transfer News: Manchester United poised to sign Lens star - Raphael Varane

Manchester United have emerged as front-runners to sign the 18-year-old Lens defender Raphael Varane following the French club's surprise relegation.

Varane is regarded as one of the outstanding young players in the French game after breaking into the Lens team at the age of 17. Now 18, he was unable to stop them being relegated from Ligue 1 but has been commended for his mature performances after establishing himself in the side over the past two months.

The clubs are likely to compromise on a deal which the French side believe should be worth £10 million, and that the player could be immediately loaned out to another side in France’s top flight next term in order to aid his development and harbour his concerns of a lack of first-team opportunities at Old Trafford.

The fact Varane can also play in a holding midfield role will also appeal to Ferguson, especially as Owen Hargreaves's contract at Old Trafford runs out next month.

Real Madrid are also pursuing Varane, but United's long-term interest has given the Premier League champions a head start over the Spanish club.

De Rossi has experienced a somewhat troubled stay at the Stadio Olimpico over the past three seasons and his representatives are believed to be pushing for an £18 million move away from Roma in the summer.

The Roma vice-captain recently separated from his wife whilst his father-in-law was shot dead. Furthermore, after openly admitting to a fallout with the Roma faithful, he has given his clearest indication yet that he open to a move, despite his boyhood ties with the club.

Man Utd News: Smalling set for derby start

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Chris Smalling will start alongside captain Nemanja Vidic in central defence for the visit of Manchester City on Saturday.

Ferdinand has not recovered from the calf injury he sustained in the warm-up ahead of United's defeat at Wolves last week. Evans played in that game but missed Northern Ireland's loss to Scotland on Wednesday with an ankle injury and is still sidelined.

Smalling, a £10million signing from Fulham in the summer, has performed admirably in his performances for United so far this season but has yet to face a stern test of his defensive capabilities. A cool and calm defender, much like Ferdinand, Smalling has so far mainly showed his passing and aerial ability without having to over-exert himself with tackling and blocking. The attacking talent at City’s disposal should give a solid barometer for his ability to deal with the pressure of such a high-octane contest. Nonetheless, his form was rewarded with a first call-up to the senior national team for the friendly with France in November, although you suspect that manager Fabio Capello was more interested in taking a first-hand look at Smalling than using him on the pitch.

In fact, Smalling’s possible entry into the big time is similar to that of Evans’. The man from Belfast was thrown into the action for his league debut against Chelsea and performed brilliantly, leading to him replacing Wes Brown as third choice centre back and creating a burgeoning reputation for himself. If picked on Saturday and in the subsequent weeks, Smalling will be hoping for a similarly successful run in the team until his mentor Ferdinand returns.

UNITED News : Man Utd Boss anger at red card

By  Will Taylor
Monday 17 January 2011

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was left incensed by Mike Dean’s decision to send Rafael off against Tottenham on Sunday.

The usually vocal Scot refused to comment directly on the incident but when pressed said, "I don't need to discuss that. You can see for yourself. I don't need to discuss the referee."

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was sympathetic with Ferguson, describing the decision as “harsh”. "It was Mary Decker and Zola Budd," Redknapp said, referring to the infamous coming together of the 3,000m finalists at the 1984 Olympic Games.

"He was just running and he has clipped Benoît's heels. He has not broken his stride and stuck a leg out, saying 'I'll trip him'. He was trying to get out of the way."

UPDATE: Man Utd January 2011 Transfer News

The 22-year-old was linked with United last month but the Daily Mail reports that Sir Alex Ferguson has been alerted to the fact the Benfica are already on the look-out for a replacement with Everton target Taye Taiwo of Marseille and Oscar Wendt of FC Copenhagen among the players they are looking at.

United are considering a bid for £20million-rated Coentrao, amid growing concerns over the future of Patrice Evra, who is still weighing up a possible move abroad at the end of the season.

UNITED News: Kuszczak believes he is good enough to be United no.1

Kuszczak told the Manchester Evening News: "I know I have not got the biggest name in the world, and I do not want this to sound arrogant... I think I am good enough. I have talked to the boss (Sir Alex Ferguson) a few times and he said we will see what happens at the end of the season.

"I know that in the meantime if I get a chance I have to play well because that is the only way I am going to impress him. If Sir Alex Ferguson decides I am not good enough, then I will look for another club.

"Everything is open now. I am realistic about my situation. It would not frighten me to take over as Edwin successor. Why should it? I am not new here. If I play for this club long term I will be really happy because that has always been my dream. I came to Manchester to try to be a top goalkeeper for many years like my idol Peter Schmeichel."

Sir Alex Ferguson has change of heart over strengthening line-up

According to skysports.com, Ferguson has revealed he could make a single swoop in the transfer window to bolster his Manchester United resources.

However, the Red Devils have recently been linked with a move for Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra, as well as Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson and Newcastle full-back Jose Enrique.

And Ferguson has performed a U-turn on his earlier comments by admitting United could make a solitary signing this month.

Manchester United in Kaka loan deal

Kaka could be heading to Manchester United in a shock loan deal this month which could lead to a permanent £50million move. The Brazilian superstar midfielder has been heavily linked to a move to Inter Milan – with Real Madrid wanting £50m. Chelsea, too, are seriously interested in grabbing the playmaker who has now fully recovered from an ankle injury after surgery. The link has already been established with Kaka, 28, winning a Champions League trophy with Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti when they worked together at AC Milan. But United, according to reports in Spain, have now emerged as clear favourites with Real boss Jose Mourinho happy to do business with his old sparring partner Sir Alex Ferguson.

UPDATE: Manchester United January 2011 Transfer News

The Telegraph says that Germany’s Manuel Neuer and Holland’s Maarten Stekelenburg head a three-man shortlist to replace Edwin van der Sar, a list which also includes De Gea.

However, the Daily Star is confident that Sir Alex Ferguson is “eyeing a £20million summer move for Pepe Reina as he prepares for life without Edwin van der Sar”.

The Star also says that United’s FA Cup opponents Southampton are determined to keep hold of their starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is the subject of interest from United, Arsenal and Liverpool. However, the paper says he’s out to impress in Saturday’s fourth round tie at St Mary’s.

United read to swoop for De Gea (january 28, 2011)
Manchester United will step up their efforts to land Spanish wonderkid keeper David De Gea after Edwin van der Sar confirmed yesterday that he will retire at the end of the season.

It has been an open secret that Manchester United's Dutch international would call it quits this summer at the age of 40, after a spectacular Old Trafford finale to his long and illustrious career.

Man Utd target Lyon left-back Bastos

Sir Alex Ferguson moves for Lyon’s Michel Bastos as replacement for Patrice Evra. Manchester United have put Lyon left-back Michel Bastos on their list of possible targets to replace Patrice Evra. Sportsmail revealed in December that United had made an enquiry for Benfica’s £25m-rated Fabio Coentrao, wary that Evra is destined for either Real Madrid or Barcelona in the summer. They have also scouted Newcastle’s Jose Enrique who is being monitored by Bayern Munich. Bastos, 27, is a regular in the Brazil squad and was once a target for Tottenham but Lyon now rate him at a costly £20m.

Manchester United are being linked with a move for Benfica defender Fabio Coentrao.

Jordan Henderson From Sunderland

According to menmedia.co.ukFerguson has asked to be kept informed about the Sunderland midfielder, who is also a target for City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

The England international is understood to favour a move to United with his chairman, Niall Quinn, admitting  a big money offer could be enough to tempt the Weirsiders to sell.

At the age of 20 Henderson fits perfectly into United’s ethos of buying emerging talents – and a £15m January move could be on with the midfielder crucially eligible to play in Europe.

Anderson’s resurgence in form could tempt Ferguson to hold fire on a move, but he will be aware that a host of other suitors are lying in wait to sign the highly-rated starlet.

The Italian Striker Alberto Gilardino

According to menmedia.co.uk, The Italian striker has emerged as a recent target – and with Michael Owen likely to leave Old Trafford in January, the 28-year-old would provide an experienced option up front.

With Wayne Rooney continuing to struggle for consistent form and Dimitar Berbatov carrying the brunt of the goal-scoring burden, Ferguson will not want to be left short in the title run-in.

Ferguson has spent the past two summers trying to sign a top class striker, failing to land Karim Benzema in 2009 and David Villa a year later.

Benzema is understood to be a target again at the end of the season, but he could scrap those plans if Gilardino arrives in January for £15m.
